Austin Healey 100-4 BN1 1954

Model History

The Austin-Healey 100 was developed by Donald Healey to be produced in-house by his small Healey car company in Warwick and based on Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals. Healey built a single Healey Hundred for the 1952 London Motor Show, there it impressed Leonard Lord, managing director of Austin, so much they struck a deal with Healey to build it in quantity. The car was renamed to the Austin-Healey 100. The name '100” was derived from the fact that the car was able to achieve speeds of 100 mph (160 km/h).

Production Austin-Healey 100s were finished at Austin’s Longbridge plant alongside the A90 and based on fully trimmed and painted body/chassis units produced by Jensen in West Bromwich—in an arrangement the two companies previously had explored with the Austin A40 Sports. 14,634 Austin-Healey 100s were produced.

The 100 was the first of three models to be later called the Big-Healeys, to distinguish them from the much smaller Austin-Healey Sprite. The Big Healeys are often referred to by their three-character model designators rather than by their models, as the model names do not reflect the mechanical differences and similarities well.

The first 100s (series 'BN1') were equipped with the same 87.3 mm bore and 111.1 mm stroke 90 BHP 2660 cc l4 engines and manual transmission as the standard production A90, but the transmission was modified to be a three-speed unit with overdrive on second and top. Girling 279.4 mm drum brakes were fitted all round. Front suspension was independent using coil springs and at the rear a rigid axle with semi elliptic leaf springs. The steering was cam and lever.

A total of 10 030 BN1s were built from May 1953 until replaced by the BN2 model in August 1955.

This Example

This particular example was built on 10 August 1954 for the North American Market. There is no record of the destination in the US, but it seems likely that the car was shipped to the West Coast and perhaps to Northern State (ordered with ‘’Heater’’). There is no record of the car until February 1973.

In 1973 Mr. Johnson living in Ellensburg, State of Washington, ordered some new parts for the Austin Healey from California. For some reasons the car was never finished by Mr. Johnson.

The car was shipped to Denmark from Alabama in early 1997. The new owner's first intention was just to complete mr. Johnsons’ work and bring the car back on the road. But after a more detailed examination the decision was made to do a complete rebuild of the car.

The restoration is done in the spirit of the history of the early Austin Healey’s, by using the spares Mr. Johnson already had prepared for the rebuild. The documented body-off restoration was completed with full ‘’M’’ specifications in Denmark in 2008 by a company with more than 40 years of experience in restoring and maintaining British Sportscars.

The green colour is the colour of Donald Healeys personal test car, 00N439, which was fitted with a wind-deflector, a very common accessories in the 1950’s. To keep a reference to the cars first colour, the Old English White also is kept.

The steering wheel, Exhaust Manifold and the side Exhaust system are all recreations of the British Vic Derringtons designs. The Derrington company in Surrey, UK, designed and provided different parts to the Motor Sports World in the 50’s and in the beginning of the 60’s.

The original window, side window and soft top are included and can be easily installed if wanted

The car comes with records of service history since 1997. Most recent work was done in August 2018. Documentation with lots of photos of the body-off restoration are available. The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate is also included which confirm that this car is a matching numbers and original LHD Austin Healey 100 BN1 from 1954.

This Austin Healey 100 4 BN1 with full ‘’M’’ specifications is great fun to drive with a geat sound because of the side Exhaust system right below the driver seat! The 3 speed with overdrive gearbox shifts well. This car has been fitted with a ‘’Le Mans’’ modification kit so it is also pretty quick!

The car is Dutch registered.
